The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is set to make history this Friday with the official commissioning of a landmark 20MW/40MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a development expected to improve electricity reliability for households, businesses and critical public institutions across the country.
The commissioning ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Jean Mathanga, MP, at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, following the official switch-on of the facility at its Kanengo site.
In a press statement, ESCOM Chief Executive Officer Eng. William Kaipa said the two-part launch underscores the project’s national significance and its role in shaping Malawi’s energy future.
The Battery Energy Storage System, funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) at a cost of US$20.245 million, represents a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen grid reliability and modernize power management. It is regarded as one of the most significant investments in grid-support technology in Malawi in recent years.
According to ESCOM, the BESS will provide critical ancillary services, enhance grid stability and maximize the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The system will store excess electricity when supply exceeds demand and discharge it almost instantly during peak demand periods or sudden fluctuations, helping to balance the grid and reduce disruptions.
“By storing power and deploying it instantaneously during fluctuations and peak hours, we are significantly improving our power supply and demand management,” said Kaipa.
He added that the project supports ESCOM’s commitment to delivering “Power All Day, Everyday” to Malawians.
GEAPP Malawi Country Director Dr. Collen Zalengera said the organization is proud to support a solution that will provide more reliable and stable electricity for hospitals, schools, businesses, industries and households.
“The system will help reduce dependence on diesel generators, cutting interruptions, noise, fuel costs and emissions while improving the quality of electricity supply,” he said.
With the commissioning scheduled for July 24, 2026, energy experts believe the Battery Energy Storage System will be a game changer for Malawi’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient and efficient power sector.
The greatest impact is expected to be felt by hospitals, schools, industries and small businesses that depend on uninterrupted electricity to deliver essential services and sustain production.
For years, many institutions have relied on expensive and polluting diesel generators during power outages. Officials say the new battery storage system will significantly reduce that dependence while improving the overall stability of the national electricity grid.
