The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Alfred Mateyu Chaima, has advised newly ordained priest Fr. Benjamin Diya to be a light that guides Christians on the path to salvation and to act as the salt that enriches christian life.
Bishop Chaima said this during the ordination ceremony of the new priest, which took place at Zomba Cathedral on Saturday.
He stated that a priest is a leader within the church and should therefore set a good example in his preaching so that christians can follow what he teaches.
Bishop Chaima added that he was pleased with the ordination of the new priest, noting that the Diocese of Zomba currently has only 62 priests, which is a small number compared to the large population of christians.
He therefore urged christians in the Diocese of Zomba to warmly welcome the new priest and take responsibility for supporting him both financially and in other aspects of life.
“I am very happy because today we have received a new priest in this Diocese, increasing the number of priests to 62,” he said.
Speaking after the ordination, Fr. Benjamin Diya thanked God for all the good things He has done for him, including choosing him for the priesthood and preserving his life.
He also thanked his parents for encouraging him during difficult times in his daily life and for supporting his education.
Fr. Diya’s motto is;“Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.”
Fr. Benjamin Diya was born on 11 February 1998 and comes from Ntiya Village, under Senior Chief Mlumbe in Zomba District.
Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima has assigned the newly ordained priest to serve at Lingoni Parish.
