Police in Dowa have arrested a 37-year-old man, Daniel Zimpita, for allegedly killing his estranged wife, Olipa Aluveta Nanthambwe, 37.
Dowa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Inspector Alice Sitima, confirmed the incident, which occurred during the early hours of August 8, 2026, at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.
Sitima said the deceased’s sister reported to police that her sibling had been murdered by unknown criminals.
She added that Nanthambwe was separated from Zimpita due to marital misunderstandings but was still secretly seeing him despite his having married another woman.
“On the day of the incident, Nanthambwe went to attend a tombstone unveiling ceremony at Dzaleka but reportedly went to meet Zimpita and never returned home,” she explained.
She was later discovered dead and half-naked in a garden within the camp, with blood in her mouth.
The body was taken to Dowa District Hospital, where a postmortem examination confirmed that she died due to suffocation following a physical assault.
Investigations established that the deceased was last seen with her estranged husband, with whom she had also had a protracted dispute over a house they had built together. This led to Zimpita’s arrest.
He will appear in court soon to answer a murder charge.
